A New Design
We decided to redesign the website to make it more light and blazing fast. It was fast to begin with since we were using Kinsta as our webhost. However, Divi is clunky and it doesn’t support the vision we have for the website. We were planning to put all our catalogue (1,300+ products) into our online store and Divi doesn’t play well with WooCommerce. In addition, Divi’s archive pages and blog post templates are your ordinary run of the mill templates with no customizations. Even though we have a lifetime license for Divi, we decided to look for alternatives.
Leaving Divi. Enter Generate Press and Elementor
We left Divi and said goodbye to our lifetime license. $200+ left down the drain. We looked for a similar page builder and chanced upon Elementor. From the Elementor blogs, they said that Elementor plays really well with Generate Press. Generate Press is an awesome, lightweight WordPress theme that is free to use. You can opt for their Pro plugin to get all the customizer features and that’s what we did. We also purchased Elementor Pro and started building our new website. We downloaded all our WordPress files from Kinsta and set up a local MAMP server to do the complete redesign.
It took us a while to completely redesign the website. The delay has nothing to do with Generate Press or Elementor – we were just simply busy doing other things and we cannot devote time in rebuilding the website.
In that timeframe, Elementor introduced dynamic content to easily customize post templates and archive pages. This was heaven sent as it made our workflow easier. Only thing missing from Elementor is to customize WooCommerce product pages and WooCommerce archives. We were not concerned with that since we subscribe to AE Pro to customize those pages. As a matter of fact, even before Elementor released their dynamic content updates, we were already using AE Pro to customize our post and custom post templates and archive templates.
Divi is so much pre occupied with the aesthetic features of their builder that they are now left in the dust by the likes of Elementor. I have been with Divi for 4 years and they still haven’t brought a header and footer customization to their platform. Use the free version of Generate Press and Elementor and you can easily customize headers and footers using Elementor templates and hooks and filters in Generate Press. Now that Elementor has headers and footers, things would be easier.
Moving away from Divi will take you a long time. Deactivating Divi would leave a trail of shortcodes instead of your content. Content hijack! We had to manually copy everything and paste it. No easy way to do it. Once everything is copied, time to build your website using Elementor.
We exported all our products into WooCommerce. Exporting is easy since WooCommerce has a built in exporter.
To further enhance WooCommerce, we downloaded plugins to help customers with their shopping experience. We downloaded a customized Thank You page when customers finish their purchase. We also purchased WooCommerce Product Tables to display all our products in table form. We decided that displaying our products using the standard WooCommerce pages is not feasible and decided for WooCommerce Product Tables.
WooCommerce Product Tables is an awesome plugin for WooCommerce. You can check our shop pages to see the result. Setting it up is easy and you can customize which columns you want.
We really like our redesign. We can say that this redesign will last us for many years. The redesign is modern, responsive and easy on the eyes. Moreover, our shop page is user friendly and a cut above the rest. Bar none, our shop page is the best among the rest!
